If you love reading and books, then SMART is for you! We are currently seeking volunteers throughout the state for the 2008-09 school year beginning in September.
*New Opportunity*
Want to work with volunteers and children in a school environment? Enjoy children’s literature? Organized? Then consider coordinating the SMART program at an elementary school near you!
This valuable volunteer position offers the opportunity to use your organizational skills and attention to detail while working with school staff. SMART site coordinators schedule and oversee a group of volunteer readers that help K-3 children become confident readers and productive citizens. Your support is vital in helping to reverse the statistic that 38% of Oregon fourth graders read below the basic level.
The SMART program runs from September 2008 through May 2009. During that time coordinators recruit, schedule, train and monitor a group of volunteer readers. Hours and days vary based on school schedule, number of students served, and whether duties are shared with another coordinator—approximately four to ten hours each week. Intermediate computer skills required.
Site coordinators are thoroughly trained, receive ongoing support from a SMART manager, and become an essential part of SMART’s statewide network of volunteers, staff and advocates. Contact the SMART office in your area today with additional questions or to apply.
Contact your local SMART office for more info on how to apply.
» SITE COORDINATOR POSITION DESCRIPTION
A volunteer reader reads one-on-one with two elementary-age children in need of literacy support. Your task? To encourage a love of reading and books.
Each week for seven months*, you’ll read with each child for 30 minutes each (totaling an hour). One-on-one attention helps your SMART students develop an interest in books and reading that leads to greater academic success. It’s that simple. And it works.
Apply online today! You can make a difference in a child’s life.
* We encourage you to apply even if you can’t read the full seven months. Substitution volunteers are always needed!
HOW TO APPLY
1. It’s easy! Submit your application online. Or download a paper application. Minors under 18 years, please review special instructions on the paper application.
2. SMART will conduct a criminal history check (usually 2 to 3 weeks). This process is in compliance with safety standards put forth by SMART.
3. This fall, a local site coordinator will contact you to determine what day and time you’d like to volunteer and when you can attend training. Site coordinators are on-site to train and support you throughout the year.
